 Earlier this month Oasis Smart SIM hosted its webinar on the very subject to cover the latest updates on eSIM IoT for the use case in the automotive industry.

It looked at the market challenge, the technical answer focusing on two main features - Push and IPA - as well as specific market segment expectations for automotive.

The event was led by Oasis Smart SIM’s chief marketing officer Jean-Christophe Tisseuil; R&D technical director Jean-Christophe Vinatier, and Felix Meurer, Director for Connected Automotive Solutions at Tata Communication.

Industry Expectations

When it comes to the automotive industry, there are 90 million new vehicles introduced each year and there were 125 million connected cars on the road by the end of 2022 – so there is a huge market of opportunity for providers.

The GSMA, which is a global organisation unifying the mobile ecosystem, initiated the need for a remote post-provisioning SIM solution – due to the centralised production in global economy and worldwide shipping.

The GSMA has initiated a dedicated group to specify eSIM IoT to cover use cases not in scope and even bot anticipated by eSIM M2M or eSIM Consumer.

GSMA eSIM IoT specification is expected in the first half of 2023 and associated certification requirements and processes in the second half 2023.


Trends in the automotive industry


Migration of services

One of the most discussed topics is the migration from existing solutions to the SGP31/32 which will see big changes for the automation industry.



The desire for slick personalised services is increasing and the SGP.21/22 for eSIM consumer will enable passengers to have their own personal eSIM as well as personal Wi-Fi hotspots.


Reducing complexity

Add to this the use of SGP.31/32 eSIM IoT reduces complexity for automotives by using DP+ and there will be no SM-SR needed, meaning cost savings.


Much more innovation

The webinar talked about what is new for the automotive industry for eSIM IoT architecture including new the introduction of new components including the eIM which is an eSIM IoT Remote Manager – a standalone component or part of a higher-level system – and the IPA – an IoT profile assistant, which can provide different functions to manage the euICC inside the IoT device.


New components

eSIM IoT is bringing to screen free devices the same provisioning capability than the M2M specification but using the consumer architecture. The overall will of the ecosystem being to horizontalize the architecture and improve the interoperability.

New ES Interfaces are also being introduced to eSIM IoT which will offer great benefits to the system and easier integration and management.

The webinar also looked at advancements in PUSH deployment and how it works with the eSIM IoT architecture, which allows push mechanisms to the device and initiates a profile provisioning or management transaction.
