Meet Alex….

Alex is a Chief Technical Officer, working for a manufacturer of security systems (Cameras and Motion Sensors).

Alex is challenged to find a way of securely connecting objects and devices, like delivery trucks, when they visit the company site.  The complexity of downloading a temporary eSIM Profile to an unknown truck is rapidly identified as a difficult and costly solution to this problem.

CloudSIMTM  could be the solution to the challenge not only facing Alex but for many other challenges facing organizations.

The Need for New IoT Connectivity

eSIM digitalizes the process of connecting a device to cellular network enabling post-provisioning of devices and keeping the verticality of the traditional SIM model. eSIM is serving the consumer market well and is creating new opportunities for connected devices but in the world of industrial or automotive IoT, the eSIM only partially answer the problem to solve.

Many IoT use cases require permanent connectivity that the traditional SIM/eSIM architectures are not able to provide despite advanced features such as Multiple enabled Profiles allowing multiple subscription on a single eUICC.

Beyond connectivity in itself, OEMs are requiring Telematics channels to address specific use cases such as device lifecycle management or SOTA that alternative technologies such as WiFi or LoRa does not completely fulfil. Anywhere, anytime, only cellular can provide that availability, the data throughput, the security and the bandwidth that OEMs are looking for.

For these reasons, eSIM seems to be only part of the answer.

This is with that in mind that Tata Communication and its subsidiary Oasis Smart SIM have built CloudSIMTM, an innovation which addresses the challenges of secure IoT connectivity.

Introducing Cloud SIM

With CloudSIMTM, the SIM/eSIM function is stored and operated in a secure Cloud server. Put simply, with CloudSIMTM, the physical SIM/eSIM is securely located in a protected remote server separately from the device.

CloudSIMTM applies an on-demand approach to delivering connectivity. It comes as complementing the traditional vertical always on connectivity with on-demand cellular allowing permanent connectivity even though the main network access is not providing enough services.

The Cloud based SOM/eSIM holds the potential for new business models. For example, it allows industrial customers to activate connectivity for short periods of time and provision connectivity only to the devices in active use. They can optimize connections between assets – and therefore pay only for usage and not according to the total quantity of eSIMs activated.

Back to Alex

If we return to look at our use case Alex , we can see she has been working with her team to address the question of connected visiting object on site.

Alex learns from one of her staff members that CloudSIMTM  can solve the question as it allows to connect an object without any specific SIM hardware, simplifying a secure connectivity to the company Private Network.

Main drivers for such conclusion being that CloudSIMTM technology is:

  • Secure: SIMs are physically separated from the devices, stored in a remote secure server and only enables on-demand for a limited period.
  • Scalable: CloudSIMTM removes the hardware/Profile interoperability simplifying deployment of the solution.
  • Flexible: CloudSIMTM enables connectivity when you need it, where you need it and for the time you need it.

CloudSIMTM is not a virtual SIM technology. It is still very much a physical SIM, but the SIM operates remotely in a secure datacenter environment.

The application of CloudSIMTM changes the business model associated with on-demand vs permanent connectivity. Connectivity now becomes more horizontal, allowing permanent connectivity associating traditional SIM permanent connectivity with on-demand temporary one. CloudSIMTM simplifies connectivity.
